Tips for Retrieving Valuables from the Drain
We have all been there when a valuable item goes down the drain. This is not uncommon for items such as rings, earrings, and other items that are precious to us. Your first instinct might be complete devastation, assuming that the item is lost forever. However, in many cases valuable items may still be able to be retrieved.
The first thing to do if an item has gone down the drain is to immediately turn off the water. This can prevent the item from traveling even further down your home’s pipes. Hopefully by stopping the water in time it will stay in the trap beneath the sink. Jewelry is heavy and it can be one of the easier items to retrieve from the drain.
Magnets can be one of the best and easiest ways to remove a metal object from the drain. You can attach a small magnet to a string and lower it down the drain in hopes of attracting the lost valuable. Four-pronged tools, available in hardware stores, can also be useful in this predicament. The long, flexible rod with prongs can easily grab on to items stuck in the drain.
As a last resort you can take apart the P-trap, the bent pipe under your sink. This maintains a water seal to trap sewer gasses from backing up into the home. This can be a messy undertaking and isn’t for the faint of heart. It should only be considered when all other avenues have been exhausted.
Even if the item that goes down the drain may not necessarily be something that you care about retrieving, it is a good idea to try to get it out. It is very easy for items and debris to get lodged in your home’s plumbing, causing problems down the road.
Many homeowners choose to install a drain guard. Installed into your sink, this will act as a filter to prevent small objects from getting through. This can be particularly useful for homes with small children who may mistakenly drop items down the sink from time to time.
