Most of us don’t enjoy cleaning, but there are many advantages to doing so. From reducing allergens to getting rid of toxins to increasing our ability to relax fully in our homes, cleaning is one of the best ways to give our families and ourselves a health boost. Here’s how cleaning helps, and how you can benefit from it.
Physical Benefits
If anyone in your family suffers from asthma or allergies, you may already know about the benefits of keeping dust and allergens out. Mold is something else you need to be concerned with. It can pop up in all sorts of places, not just in bathrooms and kitchens. It could be in your closet, or in the walls themselves. Keeping things dry and clean can prevent these airborne toxins and allergens from polluting our lungs. You may also reduce your risk of physical injury by keeping an organized home, as you lower your chance of tripping or slipping. Not only that, but it can be a means of burning a few extra calories. You can lose over 200 calories an hour if you are really working hard. Not bad for your spring clean.
Mental Benefits
Is there anything as relaxing as coming home to a clean house? There is something so calming about having an organized and tidy property. It isn’t just your imagination. An organized house can lower cortisol levels, the stress hormone. A messy, dirty home can actually raise your chances of depression and mental or emotional fatigue. You may even find it more difficult to focus on work in a dirty environment. With a clean home, you might find yourself sleeping better, which can greatly affect how you feel both physically and emotionally.
The Tools for Your Space
Every home needs a different set of tools to get the cleaning done. You can invest in environmentally friendly chemicals and cleaners, which can keep your home sparkling without polluting your environment. Harsh cleaning agents can worsen asthma and other breathing issues and can irritate the skin. To help battle indoor air pollution, many homeowners install whole-house air cleaners. Although these systems generally cost between $1,000 and $5,000, they are highly effective at removing germs, odors, and secondhand smoke from your home. Just keep in mind that you’ll also need to swap out the filters on these systems, which typically have an annual cost of between $20 and $200.
Also, think about other tools you might need to keep on hand such as cleaning rags. Gloves will also be handy for washing dishes, and you will need disposable ones for unpleasant tasks like cleaning the toilet. You’ll want dusters, brushes for scrubbing, and whatever tool will work best for a specific task.
Making a Routine
We are all busy. Life can seem nonstop, especially in today’s society. We work, we look after our families, we try to have a semblance of a social life, and we still have to care for ourselves. The problem is, part of looking after yourself is cleaning the home. One way to ensure you can keep up with your schedule while still having a tidy house is to chart out your tasks. Like with other aspects of your schedule, think about each day, Monday through Friday. Assign one room per day, and who will be accomplishing the task. After all, the more people contributing, the easier it is. It does not need to be much, but a little each day goes a long, long way to maintaining cleanliness. Stick to one room or area per person per day. It doesn’t need to take more than 15 minutes to keep your home spotless and healthy.
You might be surprised by how creating a routine can help you maintain a good level of cleanliness in your home. Of course, having the correct tools is also a necessary step to living in a clean, healthy house. For your own well-being and that of your family, invest in keeping your property tidy. It won’t take much and is something everyone at home can pitch in to help with.
