How Interior Painting Can Transform Your Home

How Interior Painting Can Transform Your Home

A question that we are often asked from homeowners is, “How often should I paint my walls?” Not surprisingly, many homeowners go too long in between coats of fresh paint in a room, assuming that they only need to paint when changing to a new color. Over time their walls will show this neglect, from scuff marks and stains to an overall lack of luster and sheen. Today’s modern paints are designed to last anywhere from five to ten years. However, there are many other factors that can affect the lifespan of your paint.

The hallways and open common areas of your home typically experience the most wear and tear, with a recommended painting schedule of every three to four years. These types of high traffic areas will commonly show scuff marks and stains on the wall that cannot be washed away. A fresh coat of paint will return the walls to the pristine look that you want in your home.

Adult bedrooms on the other hand are much less used, meaning the paint can last significantly longer without looking flat. These rooms can typically go five to seven years in between paint jobs. Children’s bedrooms may need an upgrade more often. Although, because of changing tastes these are often repainted for a new color scheme.

The paint in the living and dining area are typically more elaborate and not re-painted until a new color scheme is chosen. Five to seven years between paint jobs is not uncommon for these rooms. The walls of a home’s kitchen and bathrooms take a lot of abuse, as these rooms are often the gathering place for the family. It is recommended that these rooms are painted every three to four years.

Painting truly is an art form.  An expert painter can leave your walls looking pristine, a smooth coat of paint with clean strokes and straight edges.  An inexperienced or amateur painter will struggle to achieve this look, making mistakes along the way.  A painting mistake, however small, can take significant work and time to repair.

The simple act of neglecting to remove all of the outlet covers and light switch plates in a room prior to painting can have a big effect.  This oversight can quickly become a painting eyesore with paint extending onto the covers, not to mention having to pry these off if you ever need to access your home’s wiring.

Another amateur mistake when painting a room is removing pictures from the wall, but leaving behind the nails.  A painted nail may not sound like a big deal, until you rearrange the room or change your artwork, leaving behind a gaping black hole.

An experienced, reputable painter like the professionals at HandyPro will take the time to account for these details, leaving you with a beautifully painted room that you can be proud of for years to come.
